The Shape of a Life

He came in like all things come —
small, loud, uncertain of the light,
fingers curled around nothing yet,
already reaching.

There were years of scraped knees and summer grass,
of learning the world by breaking small parts of it,
of a mother's voice calling him home
when the sky turned the color of embers.

Then the longer years — the ones with weight.
A love he almost let slip through,
a job that wore the edges off his hands,
children who inherited his laugh
and the way he tilted his head when thinking.

He was not famous.
He did not move mountains.
But he moved the people in his rooms —
quietly, the way a candle moves the dark,
not with force, but with presence.

There were hard winters too.
Losses that rearranged him,
mornings he had to rebuild himself
from whatever pieces were left on the floor.
He did. Each time, he did.

And at the end —
not an ending, really, more a going quiet —
those who loved him stood in a circle
and said his name like it was something
they wanted to keep warm a little longer.

He had lived.
Not perfectly. Not loudly.
But fully, in the way that matters —
one ordinary day at a time,
each one chosen, each one his.
