IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jim
Smith
December 16, 1977 – February 2, 2026
Outside of work, Jim expressed the kind of integrity and commitment to family that inspired many
Jim Smith, born December 16, 1977, in the bustling metropolis of Ogden, Utah, has officially dipped out of the earthly realm as of January 16, 2026. It’s been a rollercoaster ride through life for this technology-savvy gent who spent 15 years working in the death care industry. Yes, Jim was the guy who handled everything from Batesville Casket to Tukios—probably the only man you’d want to talk to during what he called his “very serious work.”
Known for his unwavering integrity and commitment to family, Jim was a devout Catholic... one of those guys who always knew a good place for beer after Mass. He spent many happy hours at family gatherings, flipping burgers at cookouts, or catching up with the latest scores at various sporting events, regardless of whether he had a clue about the sport or not. And speaking of sports, this dude was not just a spectator; he played football and even coached for a decade, shining as the captain of his high school team while raking in all county and all conference honors. A man of many talents, he even lent his coaching prowess to his sons' soccer teams during their glory years in elementary and middle school. Those poor kids can now share stories about the time they were summarily benched because "They weren't giving their best effort!"
However, suffice it to say, Jim was not without his share of challenges. He proudly served two terms in Iraq during Desert Storm, delighting in the fact that his friends back home were most likely wetting their pants every time he picked up the phone. As if being a war veteran wasn't a solid enough accomplishment, he also mastered the family art of sarcasm, which played a crucial role in every holiday gathering.
Jim will forever be cherished by his sister Sarah Johnson, her husband Tom Johnson (who still owes him a game of Scrabble from 2018), and his close friend Rachel Lee—who probably now has his old playlist on repeat Marching Band Through Heaven. The world has not only lost a husband, father, and a supreme burger flipper but also someone who knew how to enjoy life to its fullest, often by laughing at his own jokes (and insisting they were funny).
As we gather in Ogden to say our final goodbyes on January 23, 2026, there will be a Visitation at Sonzini 2 starting at 10:00 AM, followed closely by a Graveside Service at Sonzini Mortuary. Dress code? Anything acceptable, as Jim wouldn’t care, unless you’re wearing socks with sandals—let’s draw the line there, folks. With a heavy heart full of laughs, we bid adieu to Jim—forever a commander of the football field, family BBQs, and awkwardly timed puns.
